I notice a lot of people and themes using a lot of obscure fonts - a lot of which render horribly on my screen.. So personally , I think they could...

its a bad user experience... right?

Bad fonts do provide a bad user experience and increase bounce rate. However, they don't affect SEO at this point, although Google bots could use them as a ranking factor, if they want to.

Fonts do not effect search engine optimization. They are useful only for user experience and viewing.

Font's need to be simple, experimenting with different font styles can affect your website. As some of the font style may not be supported by all the browsers. In this scenario, visitor of your website may come across with some horrible font style and size which can annoy them.

Wellll... Yes but not so much that it should be one of the primary considerations in your site optimization. Google does take the font attributes like size, bolding, italics, etc into consideration but has a very small weighting in their overall assessments.

If I had to guess a number I would put it on the order of .01% or perhaps lower.

Best advice is to use font attributes for your users and let Google sort them out as they like.

Fonts directly affect the speed of your web pages (sometimes they can not be displayed correctly). Font does not display properly = lower performance = poor user experience = less CTR and higher bounce rate. So, have an impact on your SEO with:
Performance Speed (Direct)
User signal (indirect).

Yes it does but indirectly. If you are using fonts which are quite different and it takes time to read them. so users will not try to read the content instead they will prefer another site. so your bounce rate will be increased and that will affect your rankings. so it affects seo.

No it wont effect. Because the search engine can't see the font, it only see the html code and cache it.

One think that you need to keep in mind:
Use user friendly sized and professional fonts to get the users read your content or if the users visited and closed your website within 10 seconds...
...then it will defiantly heart your website SEO.
