What do you think about social traffic as a ranking signal? For instance, after spending money on FB ads and getting a bump in paid traffic, seeing a bump in organic search impressions?

Studies and data indicate social media can help your site rank better, but Google says social media isn't a ranking factor. What's the truth?

The impact of social media on SEO has, and probably always will be, one of the most talked-about topics in the search industry. Specifically, whether social media really helps your SEO efforts.

So does it?

Short answer: yes.

First off, in reality, it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever know exactly what’s in Google’s algorithm unless someone works at Google, doesn’t sign an NDA (good luck!), and decides to share that information with us. No shocker here — that isn’t likely to happen.

Not directly.

However, increased visibilty on social networks via shares, retweets can increase referral traffic from those posts, and branded searches for your company if someone goes to look you up after reading one of your posts. Additionally, someone may have their own website and mention your company post, or even link to it, which would then help your SEO. But, like I said, these benefits tend to be "indirect" in terms of SEO.
