Duplicate Content Penalized?
What do you think of duplicate content? Does google really penalized sites with duplicate content? How can google know which is the original and which is copied? If Google can't tell then that's just too bad for source of the content.

Duplicate content always penalized by Google, and your website can not get good  position in major search engine results listing on your targeted keywords. Google can easy know about duplicate content because crawler already crawl same content in our websites. Mean of unique content different ideas and unique wording about particular topic.

how can google know which is the original?

and does it penalize the whole website reducing its PR? or does it penalize the page with the copied content only?

how about comment-posts that are copied from another site? that's definitely a copied content that could harm the blog being commented on.

It's like if the same content is used at plenty of places then there are chances that it could be treated as duplicate content and on top of that the content is considered to be one of the most important aspect so the originality is what could be termed as the best things to look out for. Though, it surely could be a problem to know the actual source of the content.

Yes, duplicate content is penalized by Google as Google has launched new update called panda. All the contents are checked if these are found duplicate then these are deleted or sites may be banned for that user.

This is the very much known update of Panda that content must be new with high quality stuff. The relevant content is always appreciated by users which can help to add business as well as god traffic generation phenomenon can be occurred over there. So the duplicate content contaminated websites or webpages must be penalized.

The issue of duplicate content and search penalties has been a hot topic for content marketers over the last few years. Google has made it very clear that duplicate copy will be ignored and that there can be penalties that hurt the search rankings of the site reposting the content.

Of course and you should be penalized by the search engine and as a result your sites not shows in SERPs. So always prefer to put some quality and unique information or content in your website.

I will give you an eg. "Search Engine Optimization refers to the collection of techniques and practices that allow a site to get more traffic from search engines " now search it in google it will tell you from where you have copied it, so you got to know the source who caught. Google is smarter  8) and yes they will obviously penalize your site.

If you use the duplicate content then for sure you will penalize by Google. Google is not doing such things manually hence the first content got indexed in Google is considered as unique content and the secondary content is considered as copied content.

So if you have copied the content from some source and if you are able to index it faster than the original then Google will consider your content as original (Actually its not).

Hope now you are clear about it.

Fix duplicate content on a website with these techniques.
(1)  Using canonicalization tags in the website's Meta data can enable the search engines know what urls to index or give authority. The advantage of the canonicalization is that its quite eay to implement and there are several ways to implement on different CMS platforms whether its wordpress, Joomla or CMS made simple.
(2) Using the Google Webmaster tools to set the preferred version of the website is another way to solve this problem.
(3) Setting the preferred version of the website's domain is the most effective way to deal with duplicate content on the website. This means that you expressly tell the search engines which domain; the www or non-www version of the website you prefer indexing.

Duplicate content is content that appears on the Internet in more than one place (URL). This is a problem because when there are more than one piece of identical content on the Internet, it is difficult for search engines to decide which version is more relevant to a given search query. To provide the best search experience, search engines will rarely show multiple, duplicate pieces of content and thus, are forced to choose which version is most likely to be the original (or best).

Three of the biggest issues with duplicate content include:

Search engines don't know which version(s) to include/exclude from their indices
Search engines don't know whether to direct the link metrics (trust, authority, anchor text, link juice, etc.) to one page, or keep it separated between multiple versions
Search engines don't know which version(s) to rank for query results
