Hello Dude!!
Add a rel="canonical" link to the <head> section of the non-canonical version of each HTML page.
Quote
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/index.php"/>
I hope I was able to explain this ;)

if you have number of page duplicate as same content and information, then for seo point of view canonical meta tag is benificial for that point of view, as <link rel="canonical" href="example.com"/>, so there are canonical which url placing in this link so search engine feel one page for number of duplicate page.

Thanks
Brijesh

You can specify a canonical page to search engines by adding a <link> element with the attribute rel="canonical" to the <head> section of the non-canonical version of the page.
eg : <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish"/>

Adding this link and attribute lets site owners identify sets of identical content.

If you have two different pages on your site with same content on the page then google will penalize your site on the basis of duplicity. So google provided you a solution for this by adding canonical tag on one page. This will tell google bot that this is not a duplicate content and you will not be penalized.
