officially #Google hasn't decalred AMP as a ranking factor. Though, we can notice on mobile that major sites are ranking with amp page. In a recent a conference, Google officially declared they are going mobile first. It means, they will crawl and index mobile [responsive / adaptive] website first.

In short, I recommend you to implement AMP.

As everyone knows mobile is playing a significant role in the web space, there're more searches on mobile now than on desktop on Google's platform.  So this poses a problem for websites that are on those mobile devices because they can be Slow Loading, Nonresponsive, Content Shifting, So it will hard to Navigate on the phone for the user.
So AMP is absolutely necessary.!

Yes, It is still important.

1. AMP basically aims to solve the problem of slow loading time.

2. Google using these AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) to serve the content on mobile devices without the need of users to have to click through to the website to check the content.

3. AMP's optimization techniques will help the pages to load instantly.

4. AMP makes it very easy for the publishers, advertisers to offer resource intensive content like image carousels, plug-ins, and video by reducing the total bandwidth required to deliver this kind of content.

Yes, AMP is now required to rank higher because users use smartphones instead of Desktop or Laptops.
So, Google decided that websites should be mobile friendly.

Yes absolutely neccessary,  Because it has been speculated to have two benefits for SEO. One is it will have a "Fast" label designation on search engine results pages, and the other is that it will be a ranking factor.

You are right, AMP pages help to improve the loading speed of the website. Having said that, it is not necessary to use AMP, your website can rank higher in Google even if your web pages are not AMP.
