In a recent a conference, Google officially declared they are going mobile first. It means, they will crawl and index mobile [responsive / adaptive] website first.

You are right, AMP pages help to improve the loading speed of the website. Having said that, it is not necessary to use AMP, your website can rank higher in Google even if your web pages are not AMP.
