For aesthetic reasons, the template I use in my website has a menu on the left and the content on the right. The left column with the menu appears prior to the content column in the HTML source. I heard about the way Google identifies the main content, but I get different opinions and I would like to know if you think that in the 2014 the responsive technologies are more important than the way the code is written or not.
Thank you.

It does not matter to a search engine where you keep your content, all matter is to have a unique and fresh content. I dont think so,that website rankings will be effected with content positions.Google fetches the content within your website, where ever it is placed.

I know that, for example, AdSense pays more for content on "the top" of the page. How can they determine what "the top" is? And is this algorithm used in search engine algorithm...?

Same with keywords. Those at the top have more "value". But I don't know anything about menu. Sorry, ufobm.

Yes content positioning is important in HTML as it improves the quality of visibility from user & search engine point of view. They all important in overall representation of the site.
