A meta tag is a tag (that is, a coding statement) in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) that describes some aspect of the contents of a Web page. The information that you provide in a meta tag is used by search engines to index a page so that someone searching for the kind of information the page contains will be able to find it. The meta tag is placed near the top of the HTML in a Web page as part of the heading.

Meta tags play an important role in your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) initiatives, as they generally instruct search engines how to categorize and index your pages. Until recently, meta tags were considered the magic wand of the web fairy, helping websites to fly forward in indexing by search engines. Today, their weight in the optimization of websites has plummeted. However, they remain a good support tool which must be properly combined with other marketing strategies to increase the number of visitors.

I agree with you that shorter urls do best for search results. I think these urls should be meaningful and responsive to different gadgets too.

Some search engines may display the meta description as a part of the search results, but the meta keyword tags should not appear in search results.
The general consensus among SEO experts is that metatags are dead. Even so, many of these same experts continue to use metatags in their own sites.
For Google, adding the description meta tag does not result in a boost in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), but the description might be used for the description for your SERP listings in Google.
Yahoo! says, they use the Keyword Meta Tag when it ranks a page. Hence it makes sense to add one for Yahoo! and any other minor search engines that still use.

In the SERP you can find hundreds of examples which show that the URL does not affect on the position of the site.
However, this is one of the ranking factors that should be used. Create clear and short URL address, at least it will be useful for your users

You can add meta tags in different ways, depending on the tool you use to create and update your site.

You can also add your meta tags to your pages by hand. Meta tags should be placed within the <head> tags near the beginning of your page code, like this:
<head>
<title>your business name and page title<title>
<meta name="description" content="a description of your site">
<meta name="keywords" content="relevant keywords about your site">
</head>

Hello Lipi,
Yes this is right that Meta tags (Keyword and description, not meta Title) doesn't have any impact in rank position. Google and other search engines never consider it as ranking factor. Meta keywords are really worthless and it helps competitors to understand what is important for us so i can't see any reason to use meta keywords.
