Manually submitting a site to search engines is actually the best way to go rather than waiting around for someone to link to you or using some junky submission service provided by your hosting company. First get set up on Google and Bing webmaster tools. Submit your sitemaps and rss feed through both. Use the fetch as googlebot tool in GWT to have your site instantly crawled, then click on submit to index. Use the submit URL feature in BWT to have bingbot crawl your site. I also find it helpful to resubmit the sitemaps every time I add a new page to sites. Google will instantly index any changes on your site if you follow these processes through GWT. Bing is a bit slower.. usually takes about a week or two to get set up.

1) Submit directory to search engines from their add URL page.
2) SE will find your site from back link too.
3) Never use tools, software, or website to submit site to 1000 or 2000 or any search engines, they collect your email address.

Submitting manually means submitting slowly but naturally. Google does not want links to be submitted all at once.
