it's extremely important to know the exact algorithm update that hit your website.Penguin targets webspam (and at this point it's heavily targeting unnatural inbound links).  So, if you incorrectly believe you were hit by Penguin and start addressing links, then you would be wasting your time.

Hello friends,

The Google Penguin update looked at several factors when re-assessing how it ranks web pages. If your site appeared over-optimised, you may have lost search engine rankings. If your site had a lot of duplicate content on it, this may have hurt you as well.

Google Penguin is an algorithm update launched by Google in 2012. It was designed to target websites that were deemed to be engaging in manipulative link building practices, such as buying or exchanging links to artificially boost their search engine rankings. Penguin analyzes the quality and relevance of incoming links to a website and penalizes sites that violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines. The goal of Penguin is to promote fair and organic search engine optimization practices and provide users with more accurate and trustworthy search results.

Google Penguin was specifically introduced to combat web spam, especially manipulative link building practices. Its primary focus is on evaluating the quality and relevance of external links pointing to a website.

When Penguin detects websites that violate Google's guidelines by participating in link schemes or engaging in other link manipulation tactics, it imposes penalties on those sites. These penalties can lead to a significant drop in search engine rankings or even complete removal from search results.

The aim of Google Penguin is to ensure that search results are more reliable, credible, and relevant to users. By penalizing websites that engage in spammy or unnatural link building practices, it encourages webmasters to adopt more ethical and organic approaches to SEO. It also discourages the use of poor-quality, irrelevant, or low-value links as a means of artificially inflating search engine rankings.

Google continually updates and refines its algorithms, including Penguin, to adapt to changing spam tactics and improve the quality of search results. It's important for website owners and SEO professionals to stay informed about these updates and ensure their practices align with Google's guidelines to maintain or improve their search engine rankings.
