We are using canonical link tags for product pages in a scenario where the URLs on the site contain category names, and the canonical URL points to a URL which does not contain the category names.  So, the product page on the site is like www.example.com/clothes/skirts/skater-skirt-12345, and also like www.example.com/sale/clearance/skater-skirt-12345 in another category.  And on both of these pages, the canonical link tag references a 3rd URL like www.example.com/skater-skirt-12345.  This 3rd URL, used in the canonical link tag is a valid page, and displays the same content as the other two versions, but there are no actual links to this generic version anywhere on the site

Sitemap URL canonicalization refers to the process of selecting a preferred version of a URL when multiple versions of it exist. This is important for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes, as it helps search engines determine the most relevant and authoritative version of a webpage.

In the context of sitemaps, URL canonicalization involves ensuring that all URLs included in the sitemap are properly formatted and consistent with the preferred version of each webpage. This typically involves specifying the preferred URL using rel="canonical" tags or redirects.

By providing a clear and consistent signal to search engines about the preferred version of a URL, sitemap URL canonicalization can help improve the crawling and indexing of a website, potentially leading to better visibility and rankings in search engine results.

Sitemap URL canonicalization is crucial because search engines are constantly crawling and indexing webpages, and there can be multiple versions of a URL that lead to the same content. For example, a webpage may be accessible through both "http://" and "https://" protocols or with and without the "www" prefix.

When search engines encounter different versions of a webpage, they may view them as separate entities, resulting in potential duplicate content issues. This can dilute the authority and relevancy signals for a particular page, leading to lower search rankings.

To solve this problem, sitemap URL canonicalization helps specify the preferred version of a webpage's URL. By including the canonical URL in the sitemap, search engines understand which version of the URL to prioritize and consider as the primary source of content.

Additionally, using rel="canonical" tags within the HTML of webpages themselves can also help indicate the preferred URL version. This tag tells search engines that even if there are variations of the URL, they should treat the specified URL as the authoritative one.

Overall, sitemap URL canonicalization is an essential SEO practice that aims to consolidate and optimize a website's URL structure, ensuring that search engines interpret and rank the desired URL versions correctly.

URL Canonicalization means the URL in question has a canonical element that points to another URL, yet is included in an XML sitemap.

Canonicalization is the process of selecting the representative –canonical– URL of a piece of content. Consequently, a canonical URL is the URL of a page that Google chose as the most representative from a set of duplicate pages.
