Hi there,

The canonical tag  is used to deal with duplicate url problem. If a website contains duplicate pages then canonical tag in the duplicate pages will redirect the search engine to the actual page and all the link juice will be directed to the actual page.

Hope this would help,

Canonical tag is very useful tag as per SEO field. If you have two pages with different URLs but the contents are same then Google will consider it as a duplicate content. If you use this Canonical tag then you can tell Google to ignore the duplicate page.

According to Google Webmasters a canonical page is the preferred version of a set of pages with highly similar content. If Google knows that these pages have the same content, we may index only one version for our search results. Users can specify a canonical page to search engines by adding a <link> element with the attribute rel="canonical" to the <head> section of the non-canonical version of the page.
eg : <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish"/>

Adding this link and attribute lets site owners identify sets of identical content.
