Title: Anyone Use Dogpile?
Post by: flyeaglesfly on 06-14-2010, 14:40:06
It seems like a good concept, the search results of Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask all rolled up into one engine.  Yet the site is currently ranked 2,456 on Alexa, and simply by using it I can tell that the results are mediocre, and other than Ask, all of the search engines it gets results from are better as stand-alone.  Any idea why it's not popular or why it's results aren't as good as you would expect?

I had the same question when I first heard about dogpile. It seemed a good concept but I think the lack of propaganda and maybe irregular search results problems which have made the search page unfavorable.

Dogpile has been here since 1996 according to Wikipedia. Based on what I've read, it's quite promising but it hasn't actually done a good job.

Ahaha I haven't seen a dogpile reference since 1999. I believe optimizing for dogpile would be silly since it is based off of Ask and Yahoo. Stick with the big 3 and you will be fine.

I've used it and I found it very bad. The main reason is that we are familiar with google and we can't like these old techniques.

InfoSpace created the Dogpile search engine because your time is important to us. Powered by Metasearch technology, Dogpile returns all the best results from leading search engines including Google and Yahoo!, so you find what you’re looking for faster.
Each search engine has its own method of searching and each will return different results. Dogpile looks at all of them, decides which are most relevant to your search, eliminates duplicates and reveals them to you. In the end, you get a list of results more complete than anywhere else on the Web.
