There are many symptoms which clearly show that the website is penalized by Google or other search engine. I know that when the site penalized there are various changes on websites that are listed below:
- site indexing - this is the very beginning sign, when our website indexing status is increased, decreased and not be stable position.
- Google Analytics - if the website penalized by Google then the organic traffic is alos changing, it will be down, up with big gap not in a stable position.
- Effect on Keyword position - when the website is penalized or near to penalty line, then it aloso effect on the keyword position, it will be fractured with a very big gap.
- page rank - that is another sign ift the website is penalized, then the website page rank is also affected.

If your website  is penalized due to unnatural, Spam or irrelevant links then you can recover by deleting these kind of links. If you can't do that due to any reason, then Google also provide us a better solution, which named as Disavow  backlinks.

Hi there,

My opinion on this one:

I just believe your not ranking well on the more competitive keywords for a few reasons:

- Your domain trust is very low because you only have 1 or 2 root domains linking to your website. That's not enough to start ranking well on more competitive keywords. Make sure to work on a strong link profile with more qualitative links (from different sources and root domains). This might be an interesting article to read.

- This remark relates to the previous one but make sure to provide quality content. Content where other websites can link to. You website looks more like a landing page at the moment.

As far as I'm concerned your certainly not penalized by Google.

Hope this helps,

SEO student is correct re where manual or partial manual penalties will appear. As to your real problem, I do not think it is a manual penalty. I think you have messed things up with trying to build a new site on the old while it is still up. Is there a reason you did not build the new site on a dev domain : OliversDevDomain.com/clientsite? Get the site where you want it and then simply repoint the domain.

Probably, you have 'confused' things with the search engines by having duped content, and/or you have redirects that are 404ing, etc. Have you run the site on screaming frog or similar software to see what you have? That would be my first move, then I would make a change in how I was rebuilding. It is likely, if the rebuild is complete and you no longer have duplicate content (and the url structure is unchanged) you will likely pop back into the rankings fairly soon.

I would be disingenuous if I did not say that given the approach to the redesign, it is likely there are other issues. If you have a baseline crawl of the old site to compare to the new that would be helpful.

Good luck with this,

Robert
