For blog promotion to happen the niches have to be popular and have to be most sought after indeed.  There are several blogs which do not get a sufficient traffic at all simply because the niche happens to be not that good.

Niches do have to be popular to make money otherwise people are not going to search for them, which in turn will not make you any money - However do not disregard everything you think of as who's to say that niche will not become popular later and start making you a fortune!

So keep every plate spinning as it were and if after a year or so it hasn't taken off maybe ease off!

Sadly 'tis true.

Someone else here also made a good point, the more competition the more potential visitors to your niche, but the less competition the easier it is to get visitors since there aren't many other blogs out there.  Of course that also means to be successful you'll need to capture most of the market...
