HTML is stand for Hyper Text Markup Language and it is use to create Web pages while XHTML is stand for Extensible Hyper Text Markup Language is application of XML language and develop version of HTML.
In XHTML xml syntax is more expressive than HTML and HTML is using SGML syntax.
In XHTML java Script and CSS is apply bit differently due to case sensitivity while Java Script and CSS both are perform well in HTML.

HTML is a Hypertext Markup Language. XHTML is an Extensible Hypertext Markup Language.
HTML is displaying information while XHTML is describing the information.
XHTML elements must in lowercase and properly nested. In XHTML attribute names must be in lowercase and must be quoted.
In XHTML all tags must be closed but it is not necessary in HTML.

HTML is used to displaying information  and XHTML is used to describing the information. HTML is Static web page and XHTML is dynamic web page. HTML is design to display a data and XHTML is design to describe a data.  XHTML elements must be properly nested, it must always be closed, it must be in lowercase and documents must have one root element but in HTML it is not necessary HTML will run if we forget to close the tags. These are manly different between XHTML and HTML.

HTML is usually depending on the SGML. Which indicates you can eliminate some labels if need occurs. However, XHTML is XML based.  XML does not allow tag elimination. With HTML, you can use the functions minimization choice. This is not allowed in XHTML.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) it is used to create static pages using simple markup tags tables, creates divisions, gives a heading message and actually outputs text.

XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) it is the extended form of HTML. Except it has a cleaner syntax. XHTML uses the same tags as HTML, so people who know HTML know messy XHTML. New rules apply in XHTML, such as tags always needing to be ended tags.

HTML and XHTML are both languages in which web pages are written. HTML is SGML-based while XHTML is XML-based. They are like two sides of the same coin. XHTML was derived from HTML to conform to XML standards. Hence XHTML is strict when compared to HTML and does not allow user to get away with lapses in coding and structure.
