Post by: james_ashby on 06-20-2010, 18:07:30
Is it just me or has everyone else noticed that ICANN keeps raising prices and domain registrars keep knocking up prices to compensate for this ? What's going on man! We've seen two price hikes in the last 6 months!

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is responsible for managing and overseeing the global domain name system (DNS) and IP address allocation. In recent years, ICANN has implemented price increases for domain registrations and renewals.

The primary reason behind these price hikes is to fund ICANN's operations and support its mission to maintain a stable and secure DNS. Managing the DNS infrastructure, enforcing policies, coordinating with domain registries and registrars, and ensuring cybersecurity measures are all part of ICANN's responsibilities. As technology evolves and new challenges emerge, ICANN needs to invest in modernizing and improving the DNS ecosystem.

ICANN operates on a multi-stakeholder model, which means it considers input from various stakeholders, including the internet community, governments, businesses, and technical experts. The decision to raise prices is typically made through a consultation and review process, involving public comments and discussions within ICANN's community.

It's important to note that the price increases imposed by ICANN affect the wholesale price that domain registrars pay to register or renew domain names. However, registrars have the discretion to set their own retail prices. Some registrars may choose to pass on the ICANN price increases to their customers, resulting in higher prices for domain registrations.

If you're concerned about the rising prices, you can explore different registrars or look for promotional offers and discounts. It's also worth monitoring any changes in ICANN's policies or considering registering your domain for a longer duration to lock in current pricing before potential future increases.

If you've got an account with enom, godaddy or namecheap, you should have received an email telling you about the price hikes and how the registrar has to pass on this increase. Check your inbox buddy.
