It is a place for people who are not Internet-savvy to have a web presence.
That way, old friends, colleagues, acquaintances, etc. can search and find each other.

Otherwise, unless everybody had their own website and posted their name, or participated in forums and used their real names, how would anybody find each other with a web search?

It helps a lot in promoting your business by creating the fan page. Many small business owners finds the FaceBook business page as cost-effective way to promote their online business rather than to create website.

Hi Friends,

Facebook is a great way to meet friends and keep up on what they are doing. Once you add a friend to your Facebook friend list you will always know when they are adding things to their blog or updating their profile. Join Facebook groups to meet people like you, or browse the profiles to find new friends. Facebook's classmates and co-worker search is good for finding friends too.

Thanks and Regards
