What are the effects of penalized article directories on the sites that have got links from these article directories ?

Your links will be considered as harmful for your website. If you can get them removed it will be well and better for your keyword rankings.

I would say it depends on how bad it is penalized and also what is the anchor text of the link. I have no proof of what i'm about to say, but i would think that a link with brand name or url as anchor text just loses its power, but does not get harmful.  A link that has a anchored text, would take you down...

I read somewhere that for decent article directories google just stopped them from passing PR. Of course if it is like a linkfarms - it's bad for your site.

Having a backlink from the article sites will affect the ranking of the website. So it is advisable to get he link deleted from such sites. If you can't get your link deleted, then you need to disavow those links.

Penalized articles are considered as the duplicate copy or any other kind of spam work for which penalty is given. Such articles will not create big issue to the website, but it can rather creates bad impression of author OR submitted website.
