The most recent update is Google Penguin 2.1, and as you said that you lost ranking with it, then I can say that work on the content of your site and also remove the spammy links for your site. Because as it has been seen after this update that the websites having quality content and very less spammy links has not been affected or seen improvements in their rankings.

The recent Google update is a Penguin 2.1 which came out on October 4th. The outcomes of this update was having some mixed emotions for the websites, as some got hit, some remained unaffected while some got increase in their ranking.

It is right that the recent update is Penguin. But this update has not left bad experience for all the sites. So I can say that there might have been some poor backlinks created by you or the content of your website has not matched up with the quality requires by this update, these could be the reason for the fall in your ranking.

Penguin 2.1 is the recent update of Google, and it might have caused the drop down to your ranking. To recover from it you need to update the content of your site, and also remove the low quality links.

There is a tremendous amount of chatter going on about Google updating over the past couple days or so at WebmasterWorld.

On February 6th we had the Page Layout algorithm update but that didn't cause much of a fuss in the SEO forums. But something over the past couple days is.
