Here are some of the ways to get traffic for free:

Over the last year, I have found that social bookmarking and blog commenting aren't quite as useful as they used to be. Bookmarks give very little google-love and a lot of people (at least in my case) don't bother to approve blog comments.

Blog commenting is good, but since a lot of people don't check to approve comments regularly, you have to comment on a lot of sites in order to make up the difference.

Guest posting on blogs is a great way to get a high PR backlink and traffic though. Find a big blog in your niche and ask them if you can write a guest post. Make sure it is the best post you've ever written though, or they won't approve it.

I wonder why only a few users mentioned PPC. Pay-per-click advertisment is the best way to bring fast and relevant amount of target visitors. If you own a commercial site, PPC should be your first step in it's optimization.

I would highly recommend you to share all your post on social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter. It will not only help in generating Traffic, but you can also get some business from here.

Social media (share your site with others, create accounts) and link building (blog commenting, bookmarking, forum post, article submission, etc)

It's not easy to do it in these days, after Google's newly updating.

1. Original content, often update it.
2. Submit links manually, naturally and at high quality place.

Good Luck!

If you want to bring traffic to a website then according to me you do work with social networking sites like Google plus, twitter etc.  You can also try getting as many high quality back links that have the keywords in the anchor text to your website. This will help boost your website higher in the search engines for the keywords that you're trying to target.

Focus on content first. Once you have original content which will keep users attention past your your landing page, then you can start building back links.
