Identical sites, one places well, the other sucks the big one

New to the forum, so hello everyone, and please forgive any n00bie mistakes. Here's my issue:

I have two identical e-commerce sites that sell military uniform items and displays to mount them in. One URL would be like militaryuniformitems.com and the other would be militaryitemdisplays.com, but both sites have the entire product line available on each site.

The site with display in the URL places well, usually number one or number two on page one for nearly any relevant keyword, but the other site's placement pretty much sucks the big one, often showing up on page eight or nine, if at all.

I'm at a loss as to why there would be such a disparity in these site's ranking.

They are both verified in Google Webmaster Tools with and without the www URL's, both have sitemaps which are submitted and no errors found, no crawl errors, etc.

I would welcome any ideas or suggestions on boosting the second site's ranking.

Thanks
