I have a fairly large website built in regular html. I want to install Wordpress and integrate all content into it. I know I can use 301 redirects to guide Google and other engines to the new content, although will this work? I am so nervous my site is going to sink. Right now it receives over 3,000 uniques daily and has many Top10 rankings in my niche.
I want to use Wordpress for ease of page creation, plugins and PHP capabilities. I have had good success with other websites using Wordpress.
Please throw some suggestions, and possibly the actual experiences if possible. Thanks!

Whatever you are looking to implement is not converting a static website into dynamic website so it will not harm your traffic any how. Also if you target the same keywords with similar Meta tags on new website then after sometime all of your previous keywords will rank for the new domain. Go ahead, there is nothing to worry about.

I would strongly suggest to you to NOT change the existing url extensions OR using 301 redirects for those html directing them to php

This is definitely no no to me (though I do not have first hand experience about large sites going from static to dynamic, thus you can research more into it)
I would like to instead suggest to you to create a completely different new website and run that on wordpress, this way you will keep your top ten rankings on the static website (3000 unique daily visits? is nothing to take chances as you are thinking of) all while creating a new website which also will complement your static website and vice versa
