The Google Webmaster tool is an excellent resource to locate problems with your site(s).  If you have used black hat SEO techniques or not--If you have links to spam sites or not The Google spider will crawl your site(s) and find out anyway, but I do understand your concern, although I feel it is misplaced.  Use the Google Webmaster tool or any other web tool that Google may provide--that is what the tools are there for--to help you acknowledge problems with your site(s)and correct them.
