Hello

I am hoping someone can help me because I have literally spent hours trying to work out what is best and I am confused as hell as I keep reading conflicting advise.

My current situation is that my site loads in 2.9s with http but with https the site loads in 6.1s

But I have read that Google prefers https as opposed to http and will give a boost for sites that use https but I have also read that Google loves sites that load fast. So if I have to chose between fast http and slow https which is the better choice for seo with Google please?

I also see that a lot of people are saying that https makes their site load faster than http which certainly isn't the case in my instance but also that wouldn't make any sense because surely https would be an extra step to process so logically https should always be even a little bit slower than http?

Can anyone please unravel the mystery with this and tell me which choice to make and or why a SSL cert should slow the site down by nearly 4 seconds meaning does that sound normal?

Many Thanks

Rab

It totally depends on the type of website you are running and what kinds of action you aspect from your users. If you collect data from your users and don't use SSL certificate then it is going to reflect very poorly on you, not just from Google's perspective but also from your users. I think you should think about your users first, what would they want more speed or privacy. The moment you figure out this question you will have an answer to your question.

Your website can definitely be fast on https.

It might be slower because the type of resource being loaded since it is going through https. Https adds another layer of processing to go through to create the page.

It will come down to:
1. Server specs & optimization
2. Website optimization
3. CDN
4. Follow Google Pagespeed tips

Here is my site speed through https: 75/100 Mobile & 91/100 Desktop.

There is no comparision in the page speed and https. The page speed is always depends upon what the content present in the page. Always try to minify the page extra content like image sizes & video sizes. Minify the html and css coding to get more improvement in the page speed. For https you can get the secure to your website it will not affect to you page load time.

why not conduct a test? if you have the ability or already have a site, test your page speed and document your rankings. Now stop building links, outreach, etc. Increase only your site speed and wait a month. any movement? I bet you will be very surprised by the results.

IMO site speed is more about use experience. If a site loads slow visitors will leave, bounce rate will increase and these factors will effect your site.

Fetching https resource URLs using http should be used only in installations where using http is safe, such as where the server running PageSpeed is a front-end to other back-end systems with private communications and mutual trust between them.
