My point of view .htm is used back when file names were limited to so many characters. Now that you can have up to, I think, 256 characters, .html came into use.

Thanks and Regards

Hi,

.htm or .html will work perfectly fine, but for future html file extension was the original file extension for HTML pages running on Unix web servers. HTML files commonly seen with .html extensions can be created with WYSIWYG.

Hi.

There is no different between these two, If your server is configured in .htm then web page will open with .htm extension and if your server is configured in .html then web page will open with .html extension. Please correct me If I am wrong.

There is great difference between .htm and .html extensions. Everyone think there is no difference but something is hide here. Acutally I don't know more but one thing is ....Using DOS we can't give more than 3 letter/character extension and when we execute the file from DOS we can't execute the file if it's extension contains more than 3 characters. So we use .htm in earlier time. But nowadays all systems support .html extension. In preferred to use .htm extension not .html because .htm is supported either old systems and modern systems.

The obvious answer is in the spelling. There is an L or lack thereof. Other than that small difference, the two documents types are exactly the same. Both types may be used the same (on most host servers) and both will be rendered the same in browsers.

There is one area of concern though, most host servers will require your default starting page to be named as "index.html" and not as "index.htm". Although that will also vary depending on your host and their setup.

hello,

Difference between htm and html::

We come across many types of files while building webpages. The only way to differentiate between these files is their file name extensions. Web pages are the most common types of files found on web servers. The webpage's standard file extensions are .htm and .html. Both these extensions are related to HTML, the basic language used for writing webpages. These extensions are usually used for webpages with static content.

Technically speaking, apart from the letter L, there is no difference between .htm and .html. .htm is sometimes used as a short form extension of an HTML file. For example, a file can be defined as "htmltemplate.htm instead of "htmltemplate.html". The main advantage here is that Window 3 X and DOS based computers that prefer three character suffixes (.htm) over four characters (.html) may recognise this file name. But, the disadvantage is that the latest operating systems might have difficulty is recognising it as an html file. However, the existing servers give you the freedom to setup your default file name. Hence, the use of .htm over .html or vice versa, depends on user preference.

.htm files serve the same purpose as .html files. .html file extension was the original file extension for HTML pages running on Unix web servers. HTML files commonly seen with .html extensions can be created with WYSIWYG html editors, such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe GoLive and Adobe ColdFusion Builder and are supported by all web browsers. While .htm file extension was created for Windows 3X and DOS based computers that do not understand extensions with more than three characters. This less common extension arose with the use of WYSIWYG html editors, like Expression Web, FrontPage and SharePoint and Mac html editors like Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, Adobe GoLive and Adobe ColdFusion.

File extensions help the operating system to identify the kind of data file it is dealing with and in identifying an appropriate program to read and edit it. At times, the computer is unable to open "unknown" file extensions that may not have the associated program installed to be able to open it. In such cases, html converter is required to convert .html/.htm extension files into other formats and vice versa.

Concisely, .htm and .html are both recognised as HTML files. The only difference between the two is that .htm is used as an alternate to .html by few servers that do not accept four character extensions. However, operating systems have advanced over years and now, they support long name too.

The following links will shed more light on the difference between .htm and .html file extensions.

Hi,
There is no difference in htm and html. Only the difference is L characters. Some server doesn't accept 4 characters extensions they only allow 3 characters extensions.

They are the same, but htm is used for file systems that expect 3 character file extensions. For historical reasons htm is often used on Windows systems. This follows the conventions established by the 8.3 naming restriction in the FAT file system, but there is no technical reason for a three character limit om modern file systems.

html document expansion was the first record augmentation for HTML pages running on Unix web servers. ... Briefly, .htm and .html are both perceived as HTML records. The main contrast between the two is that .htm is utilized as an other to .html by couple of servers that don't acknowledge four character augmentations.

The 'htm' file extension is the same as the 'html' file extension; it was simply used before as file extensions used to be limited to 3 characters. When making your website, it really doesn't matter which one you use as it won't make any difference.

HTM and HTML refer to file extensions of HTML files. They are files of a plain text type. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, which is a markup language used for creating web pages. HTML actually uses markup tags for describing web pages. As file extensions, they are denoted as .htm or .html. If you use HTML files to create your web page, then an .html or .htm will most likely appear at the end of its URL. Here are examples: 'http://code.google.com/chrome/extensions/samples.html' and 'http://edgewisdom.com/Finance1.htm'.
