The 'htm' file extension is the same as the 'html' file extension; it was simply used before as file extensions used to be limited to 3 characters. When making your website, it really doesn't matter which one you use as it won't make any difference.

HTM and HTML refer to file extensions of HTML files. They are files of a plain text type. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, which is a markup language used for creating web pages. HTML actually uses markup tags for describing web pages. As file extensions, they are denoted as .htm or .html. If you use HTML files to create your web page, then an .html or .htm will most likely appear at the end of its URL. Here are examples: 'http://code.google.com/chrome/extensions/samples.html' and 'http://edgewisdom.com/Finance1.htm'.

Technically speaking, apart from the letter L, there is no difference between .htm and .html. .htm is sometimes used as a short form extension of an HTML file. For example, a file can be defined as "htmltemplate.htm instead of "htmltemplate.html". The main advantage here is that Window 3 X and DOS based computers that prefer three character suffixes (.htm) over four characters (.html) may recognise this file name. But, the disadvantage is that the latest operating systems might have difficulty is recognising it as an html file. However, the existing servers give you the freedom to setup your default file name. Hence, the use of .htm over .html or vice versa, depends on user preference.

HTML or HTM both are same because .htm using html old version people save the file. When html5 version came from that time to till now people using .html . Both file are working same difference between html version.
