I just did a search for "How to get your ex back" a highly competitive niche in the affiliate game.

On the first page is a non-related blog about internet video news.

Also on the first page is a site that simply redirects to a popular Clickbank product. I've always thought that Google didn't rank redirect pages highly at all, but this is in the top 10 for a search with 610,000,000 results.

There's also a new blog with only 6 pages of content.

What the heck is going on with Google?

Google's ranking algorithm is complex and takes into account a variety of factors to determine the relevance and quality of websites. It's possible that the non-related blog you mentioned may have been considered relevant based on certain keywords or other factors. Similarly, the site redirecting to a Clickbank product may have been deemed useful by Google for certain search queries.

Regarding the new blog with only six pages of content, it's worth noting that the ranking of a website is not solely dependent on the number of pages it has. The quality and relevance of the content, as well as other factors such as backlinks and user engagement, also play a significant role in determining rankings.

Here are a few more factors that could contribute to the rankings you observed:

1. Backlinks: High-quality backlinks from authoritative and relevant websites can significantly impact a website's ranking. These links act as endorsements, indicating to Google that the linked website is trustworthy and provides valuable content.

2. User signals: Google also considers user signals, such as click-through rates (CTR), bounce rates, and dwell time, to determine the relevance and usefulness of a website. If users are engaging positively with a particular website, it may receive a boost in rankings.

3. Website authority: The overall authority and credibility of a website, which includes factors like domain age, historical performance, and social signals, can influence its rankings. Established and reputable websites tend to rank higher as they have a proven track record of delivering quality content.

4. Site structure and optimization: Proper website structure, meta tags, headings, and other optimizations can help search engines better understand and categorize a website's content. Well-optimized pages can increase visibility and rankings in relevant search results.

few more factors that can influence Google rankings:

1. Content quality: Google places a high emphasis on the quality, uniqueness, and relevance of the content. Websites with well-written, informative, and valuable content tend to rank higher.

2. Keyword optimization: Properly optimizing your content with relevant keywords can help Google understand the topic and purpose of your website. However, keyword stuffing (overloading a webpage with keywords) can negatively impact rankings.

3. Mobile-friendliness: With the increasing use of mobile devices, Google prioritizes websites that are mobile-friendly and provide a good user experience across different screen sizes.

4. Page load speed: Google considers the loading speed of webpages. Faster-loading pages tend to have better user experiences, which can positively impact rankings.

5. Social signals: While Google hasn't explicitly confirmed the direct impact of social signals, such as likes, shares, and engagement on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, they can indirectly influence rankings by increasing brand visibility and driving traffic to a website.

6. User experience: Websites that are easy to navigate, have clear site architecture, and offer a positive user experience tend to rank better. This includes factors like clear navigation menus, proper internal linking, and responsive design.

7. Localization: For search queries with local intent, Google often prioritizes websites that are geographically relevant to the user's location.

After google penguin update a lot of websites loose their ranking position in SERP and in my opinion you should be conscious about your website's content and your link-building strategy.
