Photoshop Sliced images as a background

I have been playing with taking the Sliced image results created from a Photoshop image in creating an 800x600px background. I have been trying to use CSS, wrapping the table of Slice images in a DIV and applying Z-index through CSS to create overlaying text. All this in attempt to keep the file sizes down and overlay the text. Any ideas on how I can accomplish this result without doing the entire thing in Photoshop?

It is going to be very difficult to avoid headaches if you choose to create a background which cannot tile either horizontally or vertically.

Have a link to a mockup for review and suggestions? It is often feasible to slice the background out into a handful of discrete elements which may be absolute/fixed-positioned or floated to achieve the same effect.
