XHTML

I've read some places that XHTML is eventually going to take over HTML.  Don't know much about either so could someone explain when and why this is going to happen?

XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language) is a family of XML markup languages that mirror or extend versions of the widely used Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the language in which web pages are written.

HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags enclosed in angle brackets (like <html>), within the web page content.

XHTML is the extension of HTML. It is relatively easy to introduce new elements or additional element attributes. The XHTML family is designed with general user agent interoperability in mind. Through a new user agent and document profiling mechanism, servers, proxies, and user agents will be able to perform best effort content transformation.
