Hello,

I have a client who has an existing page for a program they offer seasonally. This program has an official name (that they rank for #1) but a different sub name that changes each year. The two names are not contextually related.

Is it possible to rank for the sub name that changes each year and optimize for that AND not hurt the official name?

Official name is in the url - www.companyname.com/official-program-name and do not want to change that.

Help and advice appreciated!

use a single keyword for each page (and no more than one keyword per page). Some SEO gurus argue this is the best way to get higher ranking for that particular page in the SERPs. My personal opinion would be 1 or 2, but I would like to hear what you suggest and think about it.

It is very hard to rank for a short tail keyword today. I would recommend yout to target a long tail keyword which will cover your short tail keywords too so you will be able to rank for many keywords low competative as well as high competative.

Yes, it is possible to optimize for the sub name that changes each year without hurting the ranking of the official name. One approach could be to create a separate landing page for each year's sub name, while keeping the URL structure intact with the official program name. By optimizing the content on each year-specific landing page for the sub name, you can target relevant keywords and improve the chances of ranking for that specific term. Additionally, you can also include links and references to the official program name throughout the page to help reinforce its visibility and ranking.

To further optimize for the changing sub name without hurting the official name's ranking, you can consider implementing the following strategies:

1. Content Optimization: Create unique and compelling content for each year's sub name. Include relevant keywords, headings, meta tags, and descriptions that are specific to the sub name. This will help search engines understand the relevance of the page to the changing sub name.

2. Internal Linking: Within your website, create internal links from pages that rank well for the official name to the specific landing page for each year's sub name. This will help search engines recognize the connection between the official name and the changing sub name, while still maintaining the integrity of the official program name's URL.

3. Backlink Strategy: Actively pursue backlinks for each year's sub name to improve its visibility and authority. This can be done through outreach campaigns, guest blogging, or partnerships with relevant websites. Ensure that the backlinks point to the respective landing pages for each year's sub name.

4. Social Media Promotion: Leverage social media platforms to promote each year's sub name and its landing page. Engage with your audience, share valuable content, and encourage social sharing to increase visibility and drive traffic to the year-specific pages.

5. On-Page Optimization: Optimize the on-page elements of each year's landing page, such as the title tag, headings, image alt tags, and content structure. Make sure to include the changing sub name prominently throughout the page to improve its visibility in search results.

6. Update Meta Data: Review and update the meta data (title tags and meta descriptions) for each year-specific landing page to include the changing sub name. This will help search engines understand the relevancy of the page to the specific sub name and improve its chances of ranking.

7. User Experience: Focus on providing a great user experience on each year's landing page. Ensure that the page is easy to navigate, loads quickly, and is mobile-friendly. This will not only improve user engagement but can also indirectly contribute to better search rankings.

8. Track and Analyze Results: Monitor the performance of each year's landing page and track their rankings, organic traffic, and conversions. Analyze the data to identify any areas of improvement and optimize your approach accordingly.

9. Promote Consistency: Reinforce the connection between the official program name and the changing sub name by consistently mentioning and linking to the official name throughout the website and related content. This will help search engines understand the relationship between the two names and maintain the visibility of the official program name.

Its really possible to rank page 1 with different keywords as long as these content targeted keyword phrases answers the users needs.

You can target two keywords by simply adding that particular keyword in your content and sub heading such as "H3 & H4"

If you are looking for rank 1 for two different keywords, then you can go with link building techniques for the website promotion. You can also add a blog section and write a blog for a particular page and target two different keywords.

You want people to come to your site for those particular terms and phrases. You want to rank well in the search engines for them. There can be times when it pays to connect and have multiple terms that you might be targeting simultaneously on the same page. Searcher's intent, think about the person who's performing the search query. You want their search intent to have considerable overlap between the two keywords or three keywords, if you're doing that, to make multi-keyword targeting on a single page viable.
