I'm just starting to do link building for my site. I plan on doing press releases and articles, but I also would like to know if the following will help my site in the SERPS:

Does leaving comments on blogs help at all?

How about posting at forums related to my sites subject matter?

If you try for getting the backlinks then press release is not for that. As press release be helpful to promote your site updated information and to make people known about this update but not for the links. And forum and blogs both are the helpful but provide the quality will be helpful to you for better result. And with forum posting the need is be continuous in the discussion and not leave the topic just after submit once.

They are good but not enough as you must do proper link building by adopting the direcotry submissions. bookmarking, forum posting, article submission and press releases also.

Blog posting and Forum both are very important for your site, you can start Forum Posting and Comment on Blogs also.
And Blog posting is very effective way for Good and Qualitative Traffic. And for Press Release i would like to say that it just like News Paper Ads., It consist all details of your Website so its too different from other activities like Blog and Forum.

Press releasing,forum posting,blog commeting,directory submission are the best for getting back links to your sites.you should get good traffic by these activities.

Blog commenting is pretty much just a waste of time for link building. People rarely click on these links and they are nofollow links 99% of the time.

Forum commenting will bring you a lot of traffic, but 90% of these links are also nofollow.

Both of these methods can be useful for building links, but you will have to dig deep to find sites that provide real link value.
