I think it's better to do blog commenting on relevant niches as people will refer to your expertise more than anything else. I agree with richardsmith that if you decide to post on blogs not within your niche, you will not get the target audience you want if they are directed to your site. There are tools to check suitable sites for blog commenting, which include Advanced Google Operators, MozBar and DropMyLink. Google Operators is probably the easiest option.
