It is very difficult to judge whether a link is good or bad for a website. You can have the prediction about it. Just go at the website where you have posted your link. Check the PR of website. Also see that how many approvals the site has. If the site has a good no. of approvals with PR then the backlink coming from that side is good. If the backlink is coming from 0 pr site then it can be treated as spam.

A bad link can be recognized if it is coming from a webpage with bad neighbourhood or from link farm webpages. It can also be hazardous if a link comes from a penalized website.

Spotting a bad link is challenging, this merely possible by delivering an SEO knowledge and skills. Prior to this, links that are non-niche, spammy links text and low quality spun article links are the most substandard of all. As an SEO, we should not get carried away with this manipulating effort, to think that you are at risk.

There are different parameters to check quality of website from where you are getting backlink.

  • Domain Authority of the website should be more than 40
  • Site should not be penalized
  • Check index pages
  • Check page rank
  • Should not be duplicate content
  • Should not be lots of outbound links

It's very easy to spot if a link is good or bad. First of all, it's the relevancy! If linking page is not relevant with the target, then it's not natural and someking of bad link. Second, the link need to pass some power so check out the page authority as well as domain authority or the website you want to get a link. The last thing is to be aware of anchor text. Don't use "exact match keywords" too often. Instead, use partial match anchors, brand name (if linking to homepage), naked URL's, and even generic anchor text. Strive for contextual links instead, comments, directory, profile, blogroll, and footer links.
Above said is contrary of what a bad link is.

First of all, don't do link exchange. At some point you can get a penalty. Anyway, if you want to check on a site, check its PR which should be PR 2+ (use SEOquake) and Domain Authority 20+ (use Moz Toolbar). Do a domain search (type the site's domain name in the Google search, without the TLD) and if it doesn't appear in the search results that means it's penalized. Also, use a tool like http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/ to see if it has malware, or uses hidden iframes and stuff. Make sure the link's anchor text doesn't contain a lot of keywords or exact-match keywords. It's safer not to contain keywords at all, those times are gone. That's pretty much it.
