Do guest posting for backlinks, Blog commenting for relevant blogs, Forums posting with signatures. And don't do link exchange(Reciprocal) because they are not good for a site's search engine either, especially when done not carefully.

In order to build Do-Follow backlinks that are very helpful for SEO ranking, you'll have to do free Guest Blogging, Quality Article submission, SEO Forum posting, social media posting, etc. Yes, you can do these activities for free of cost but you'll have to give effort and time.

For free guest blogging and quality article submission, you'll have to write quality articles yourself and find out the sites that accept free guest blogging and quality article submission according to your niche. Then you should join SEO forum sites and do social media posting.

I think these are the easy way to boost the rank of a website, and you should do these activities for SEO ranking.

I understand that you want the easiest, and if possible, a free way of getting backlinks, but there is no other way than to invest much of your time and patience in getting them. The most obvious, of course, is creating quality content on your website. You'll get links that way as your site has really good content. Otherwise, there are places where you can create a profile and place your link there such as YouTube, Yelp and of course your social media accounts. You can also shop around for affordable link building services as listed on this article: https://prospected.com/most-affordable-link-building-services/

This is a decent reply, but it does not feel enough emphasis on the importance of outreach. You can't just create good content and hope people will link back to you. You need to promote your content on social media and through email. You can even ask people to link back to you - it won't work in most cases, but a success rate of 5% is still good enough, provided that you do your research.

There is a process called guest posting. By outreach method you can have a backlink from another site. You just need to find relevant website which is related to your industry and offer them a quality content. If they like your content idea they will post your content on their website and give a backlink to your website.

Link Exchange not a good way at all, It's better to do guest posting on reputable niche blogs.

What would be the best way to approach sites where we can add links or guest post.

You can write content for websites which are in your niche. You can find websites by searching "your Keyword + write for us". Approach them through a simple mail, write quality content & ask them to give a backlink for your targeted keyword in the blog. This is one of the easiest way to get backlink from other people's sites.
