Link building is actually pretty active these days and you can find all of the top-ranking websites on all major search engines powered with lots of quality links. The matter is trying to gather the finest links as possible that will make a big difference over the net.

The matter of raising number of links seems like an outdated issue because the quality of the incoming links will determine how valuable they are. Sometimes building even a bunch of strong, relevant links will pave the way towards reaching the top of search engines.

In my opinion, they have been for awhile. A PR N/A profile backlink buried in a mixture of thousands of other profiles isn't really going to get it done. (Unless, I guess, if you have very little competition.)

I've always looked at forums as a way to build relationships and drive VERY targeted traffic.

Link Building is not dead! It is the heart and soul for every website out there on the web! Think of backlinks as votes from other webmasters giving your site the thumbs up. But remember that quality completely outweighs quantity when it comes to backlinks! Never participate in link exchanges with low quality spammy sites, which will just hurt your rankings. Having 5 high authoritative backlinks provides more link juice compared to 50 low quality backlinks.

I thought Panda is about low quality junk content, and not about links.I am building up my site with content and trackbacks alone, and it is slow-going. I recommend continuing with link-building...
