Have you done link trading?  You swap a backlink to their site for one of yours on their site?  It can be a mutual gain in SEO results by doing this.

Are you talking about link exchanging?
If so, it's useless. SEs consider reciprocal links as internal links.

I think you are talking about Reciprocal links well to tell you, they are not good at all for your site and are considered as an black hat Seo technique, if you exchange links with others then your Site can be penalized by Google. So no benefit of getting those sort of links they have no benefit and can hurt your site pretty badly. So my suggestion is stay away from these sort of links at any cost.

Link trading is the task of getting links to your site on other sites by trading links. This is done to get more traffic to you web site. Link trading creates more traffic in two main ways, increased search engine rankings and also from the traffic the links themselves generate from people clicking on them.

One of the most common strategies resemble SPAM. Some Search Engine Optimization 'Specialists' will offer, for certain amount of money, hundreds of links to your web-site coming from other web-sites, or others that offer massive link exchange or massive link trading. These web-sites are called link farms, as there sole purpose is providing hundreds of links to other web-sites. These SEO 'experts' know that number of links is one of many factors for increasing web-page rank in search results. However, they don't want to invest time and effort on doing real Search Engine Optimization by improving other 100+ factors, like for example content of your pages. They just want to make fast money by increasing your site's ranking by linking to it from the SPAM sites.

Its called link exchange and you can do link exchange in many ways like reciprocal link exchange, one way link exchange and three way link exchange but as per my experience I will not suggest you do such activity. Search engine (Google) is not considering those links natural and you may be hit my algorithm update and can loss your ranking for undefined time. So its better you focus on some other link building activities.

Link trading means getting the links from another website which is tightly related to your niche and we get this links by trading. This is a good idea to increase the ranking of the website  but it can harm if the trading link is not related to your niche.
