Image worth a thousand words.....

The image describes few links pyramids that on a low level links between each other (it's an old one so today it's less recommended)
and eventually links to the main website/url (in the middle, it says 'target site" in Hebrew)

A link pyramid is a structured form of link scheme using several tiers of links.

Link pyramids aim at creating link juice for intermediary and first tier links. It is also a way to prevent sanctions for the money site which is only directly connected with "good quality" first tier backlinks.

Link pyramid is way to represent tiered link building.

Packaged link pyramids are seldomly effective and may be dangerous for the money site because the pyramid may be detected by Google and because the first tier backlinks are often poor links.

Link pyramids are a pictoral/theoretical breakdown of how the back links of any website should look like. The visual representation of the link pyramid is the exact representation of the back linking strategy that all websites/blogs should follow. The base or the bottom part of the pyramid should contain low quality links – numerous in numbers. Low quality links are easy to obtain but do not individually add much back link value to a site. But collectively, they can pass on considerable amount of link juice to the mid level links.
