There is nothing new in link building today. You just need to concentrate on the quality of the content and build backlinks from relevant and high authority sources to get the maximum benefit for your website.

I agree with Calvin
There is nothing new in link building strategies but the way of creating links has been totally changed. Now link building is more about engaging people and related persons through their knowledge and unique long content.

Currently I use free & premium web2.0 sites for getting quality backlinks. Something different from another. For an example:
(1) For per web 2.0
    i) home page - 500 words quality articles to website niche (1 contextual/natural link+1/2 trustworthy site link)
ii) blog category with 5/6 articles (400+ words) to website niche (1 contextual/natural link+1/2 trustworthy site link)
ii) About us page with 150/200 words
   iv) Contact us page
And another :
(2) Niche dofollow forum links (natural)
(3) infographic submission (links from image)
(4) Links from News release
(5) Contextual links from niche guest blogs
(6) Links from dofollow social bookmarking sites
(7) Links from TLD
(8) Links from high authority sites with profile links. like ted, forbes, storify, flickr and etc

The search engines take notice of the quality of links. Make sure all the links to your blog are relevant. Links from high PR and same niche blogs will help with SEO. In my experience link building is the first thing that you can do in yielding traffics. Article posting, guest blogging will be very helpful in getting organic traffic. Now a day’s article posting and syndication makes a very good effect in search engine ranking of a website.
