In my opinion :
01/ Ranking : Link is need for ranking, but not enough. You need content, good landing site and a lot of other. But it will create your anchor text!
02/ Faster indexing :  If your site is good, link may help your site index faster. But if your site is just a "baby", Google will index the backlink first, and long long long time later is your site
03/ Traffic: Yes! Backlink is also brings traffic to your site. But you must take care of " where the customer see your link?". E.x : Your site is about medical, and your backlink is something about pet. Is it okay ?
04/ At last, PageRank(PR) is updated!
PR is base on how many backlink your site have. It's the past.

The last time GG update PR, there is a new algorithm for PR, and backlink is not the only one factor!
