301 redirection is known as permanent redirection and it is helpful to redirect a page permanently from one location to another. If you redirect a page through 301 redirection, it retrieves the already received values of backlinks from that old page(from where it was redirected to new one).

A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. 301 redirects send site visitors and search engines to a different URL than the one they originally typed into their browser or selected from a search engine results page.

Thanks I was wondering what this meant.  I have a couple broken links on my game design website so I'm going to use a 301 re-direct and hopefully not get punished by SEO :)
301 indicates to both browsers and search engine bots that the page has moved permanently to new URL. 301 redirects pass 90% to 99% link equity to the new URL and Google won't punish your website for redirecting old URLs to the new ones. So just work on your broken links and the issue will be resolved. Use appropriate method to redirect URLs and have a check if they are working fine or not.

301 redirects send site companies and search engines to another URL than the one they originally typed into their browser or selected from a search engine results page. I removed five times in the last year.
