Here's a step by step process,
- Inclusion of fresh unique content
- Inclusion of well-researched keywords in appropriate density
- Inclusion of meta description tags, ALT tags, H1 tags
- Placement of anchor text
- Title optimization by placing target keyword in the title
- Internal linking strategy
- Inclusion of a Sitemap
- Image and video optimization
- Page loading speed optimization

I would encourage you to go through Google's beginner's guide:

I would also encourage you to experiment with all the above mentioned features with your site.  On page results begin to have a dramatic effect when you have an older domain with a lot of links pointing back to the page, and a tweek here or there can either increase or decrease results.

Make sure that your meta-tags are arranged correctly - your page title tags and description tags should describe the content of your different web pages. The page title tags should be less then 65 characters and the description tags more detailed but less then 140 characters.

The very first step in On page optimization is Keyword research. Once you have selected your main keywords check whether these keywords are present in your website content. If not then rewrite your website's content by inserting some of your keywords. Be sure you're not inserting a keyword more than 3 times per hundred words.
When you have done with content start creating sitemap.xml and robots.txt files for your website and also register for webmaster tools for Google. Make sure your main images contain proper alt and title attribute and your website have proper internal linking structure.
