Do images play a part in onsite optimization ?
« on: 05-19-2010, 07:29:38 »
Hey guys,

With the net getting faster and faster do you think having larger images can effect your SEO.  Page load speed isn't a problem anymore but do the extra micro seconds that a site with images on affect your SEO efforts ?

 ???

@SEOfinder - Read the OP's question buddy,he's talking about using large images and how they effect page load times and the SEO knock on effect.

@AK47 - I think text rules and search engines love pure text, but good images that compliment the design and add to the user experience are a must. Plus you never know the image might get picked up in google images and that can give traffic!

Some graphics sites have very little text but loads of images and users love them. Google seems to recognise they're popular and ranks them up there. So I think it all depends on what type of site you are.

This question reminds me to photoblogs. Photographers and photography hobbyists often make blogs only contain their images. Mostly are large images, and using flash. As I tend to see less photoblog on SERP when I search for images or photography related keywords, I think large images don’t work for SEO. However, I would love to know opinion from those who ever develop photoblogs and doing SEO for photoblog. It could be interesting.

In my opinion image created through flash are not SEO friendly. If you have a big size of image, just crop it and make SEO friendly. My cropping your image, it will increase your page load time.. :)

Some image sites have very little textual content but lots of pictures and customers love them. Search engines seems to acknowledge they're well-known and has a high ranking them up there. So I think it will depend on what type of site you are.
