Image alt text can also be considered the keywords behind the image. But it is well nigh misunderstood and misused. People and 'SEO specialists' (or so they claim) alike, use image alt text to stuff and spam keywords inside their images – thinking that these invisible keywords will improve their relevance ranking.

image loading takes time to a site to download on users system makes you loose a customer ,if it is a shopping cart and if the same person is going to purchase something online thats it rest all nothing matters a lot other than business

Some image sites have very little textual content but lots of pictures and customers love them. The search engines seems to acknowledge they're popular and rankings them up there. So I think the treatment will depend on what type of site you are.

also search engines are not able to read images .Only they can read is the alt tags inside the images so do fill alt tag with your keywords always

Home page of the website and other important pages must have time for loading under 5 sec. Not the whole page but at least the text part. With using JavaScript and CSS you can first send a text part.

if someone is doing seo ,one must take care that
1) number of  images must not be more than 30
2)images with alt tags are readable by crawlers other wise they are zero for crawlers.Hence its wisdom to put main keywords in alt tags so that it relates directly to the site content .

This question reminds me that photo blogs. Photographers and photo enthusiasts in the blog is to include only your own images. Most large images, and flash is used. I have photographs or images when searching for relevant keywords in SERP photo blog less likely to see large image as an SEO, I do not think that will work for. However, when I do SEO for photo blogs photo blog development and feedback from those who want to know. It can be fun....
