Any time you use an image, be sure to include an ALT tag within the IMG tag. Doing so will provide a clear text alternative of the image for screen reader users. Alt text is accessed by screen reader users to provide them with a text equivalent of images. In visual browsers, the alt text is displayed when an image is broken, or when all images have been disabled. Using ALT tags is also beneficial to users on Palm Pilots or low-bandwidth connections, where images are slow to download.

An alt tag is a text alternative for an image or article on your page. The alt tag will be read by screen readers and additional site readers as an alternative to the image itself.

Keywords used in the ALT characteristic of an image are treated such as anchor text. Little, sincerely imaginative ALT tags also progress overall convenience and have an exceptionally strong impact on images performing in-line through searches since Google Image Search.

You should write the image name in alt tag and write the image name which is used by searchers to search your image. And when the image is not visible then alt tags tell the visitor about your image.

use a keyword inside a description. This will also allow the search engines to understand exactly what the picture is SEs cannot identify pictures without titles, tags and alt text.  Example: search "mens hat" click the first one, look "view source" CTRL+F, search "alt" you will see all of the alt text for the page. one alt text is "Pathfinder Crushable Wool Felt Outback Hat" very descriptive and unique!

There is no need you copy paste each time the exact same text. You could play around with the words and still say the same thing. I think that is the best way.

Alt tags are important for website & Image SEO. Google reads images and crawls the image as per the alt tags:

1. Adding alternative text to photos is first and foremost a principle of web accessibility. Visually impaired users using screen readers will be read an alt attribute to better understand an on-page image.

2. Alt tags will be displayed in place of an image if an image file cannot be loaded.

3. Alt tags provide better image context/descriptions to search engine crawlers, helping them to index an image properly.

The #1 purpose of your alt tags are to uniquely describe the image (as if you were giving a short 2-8 word description of it to a blind person). If it makes sense include keywords in your alt tags, just try to not have any duplicates.
