Hello there,

This is my first post on this forum. I don't know very much about SEO and I'm not sure what to expect in terms of replies to my question.

I have built a website for someone who makes hats and would like to sell them.

http://www.hatsbyrita.co.uk

The website has lots of pictures of the hats and I have tried to make sure that all images have content in the alt tags as I understand this is an important part of SEO.

What I'm not sure about is if I might have crossed over the line in to a world of spam by using the same terms too often.

I have done a fairly general Google search to see if I could find any more information on alt tags but I couldn't find anything with a definitive answer.

Would it be appropriate to ask if someone could have a look at the website and give me some advice on what to put in my image alt tags?

Thanks for your help.

You should  put your targeted keywords separated by coma(,) for perticuler page.

For example :

You are targeting 4 keywords for you homepage and homepage have 2 images,in that case you should put 2 keywords in alt tags of img1 and another 2 keywords at img2.(As per Relevant)

Use alternative or different title tags.

as you categorized the hats use them for alt and title text.

Firstly, it's important to understand what the purpose of alt tags is. The alt attribute is used in HTML to specify alternative text that is rendered when the element to which it is applied cannot be displayed. It is also used by screen readers for visually impaired users to understand the content of the image.

When it comes to SEO, alt tags can indeed play a role in helping your site show up in image search results. Moreover, they can indicate relevance to Google for certain search terms if used properly.

Here are some best practices:

Be descriptive: The alt tag should accurately and succinctly describe the image. "Blue wool hat by Rita" is better than "hat".

Consider your keywords: It's helpful to include relevant keywords in your alt tags, but it should be natural and make sense. Avoid keyword stuffing as it may lead to penalization. For example, don't say "blue hat, wool hat, hat by Rita, hats UK, best hat, stylish hat" in a single alt tag.

Keep it short: Alt text should ideally be less than 125 characters, so screen-reading tools can read it correctly, and Google can understand it.

Don't use "image of" or "picture of": This is unnecessary. You should just describe what's in the image. For example, "blue wool hat" instead of "image of a blue wool hat".

Use alt tags on all your images: It can be a tedious task, but every image should ideally have an alt tag.

Here are some other suggestions to help your website rank better:

Keyword research: Think about what terms customers would search for if they were looking for your products and ensure those keywords are included in an organic, non-spammy way in your site content.

Unique and valuable content: Google rewards high-quality, relevant, and unique content. The content on your website should provide valuable information to your site visitors.

Mobile-friendliness: More than half of global web traffic comes from mobile devices, so Google gives preference to websites that look good on mobile. Make sure your website is responsive and easy to navigate on mobile.

Meta descriptions and title tags: These HTML elements are also very important for SEO. Meta descriptions summarize a page's content and should include your keywords. Similarly, title tags define the title of a document and should also include your keywords.

Internal linking: Linking to other pages of your website helps Google understand the structure of your website. They can help give increased visibility and understanding to important pages.

SSL Certificate (HTTPS): If your site isn't already, it should be secured using an SSL certificate. Google has been using HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014.

Page Speed: Faster loading pages provide a better user experience and lead to higher rankings.

Backlinks: These are links pointing to your site from other websites, a key ranking factor. Building good quality backlinks can increase your site's authority - but remember, it's about quality, not quantity.

Social Signals: While not a direct ranking factor, having a presence on social media and sharing your content there can drive additional traffic to your site.

Structured Data: This is a way of formatting HTML that uses a specific vocabulary, telling search engines how to interpret content and how to display it in the search results.

let's dive a bit deeper into a few more advanced SEO strategies, keeping in mind that SEO is a vast field with many areas to explore:

Schema Markup: This is a type of microdata that makes it easier for search engines to parse and interpret the information on your web pages more effectively. Schema markup can improve your ranking in SERPs and enhance the appearance of your listings with rich snippets.

Voice Search Optimization: As voice assistant technology becomes more popular, optimizing for voice search is becoming increasingly important. This involves targeting long-tail keywords and phrases that match the conversational tone people use when speaking queries out loud.

E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness): E-A-T has become a bit of a buzzword in the SEO world after Google's updates made it clear that they value sites that have high levels of expertise, authority, and trustworthiness. Improve the E-A-T of your site by creating high-quality content, securing backlinks from reputable sites, and providing clear information about your business and its offerings.

Optimize for Core Web Vitals: Google's Core Web Vitals are a set of specific factors that Google considers important in measuring overall user experience like loading time, interactivity, and visual stability of the page. This will form a crucial part of Google's page experience update.

Local SEO: If the business you're promoting operates in a specific geographic area, it's particularly important to optimize your site for local searches. This includes creating a Google My Business listing and using local keywords in your site content.

Image optimization: In addition to having descriptive alt tags, make sure the image file is compressed for web use to speed up load times, use descriptive file names, and consider adding captions.

Video optimization: If your site includes video, be sure to optimize it as well. This includes using relevant keywords in your video title and description, providing a transcript if possible, and submitting a video sitemap.

Adding alternative text for images in seo and provide alternative or substitute text, primarily for use when the image is not being displayed or description of the image, without considering what job the image was doing on the page, leading to results that can range from the incongruous to the absurd.

another thing to think about is to also use the alt tag for its intended purpose, people who can't see the images but may still want to visit the site.  it's always a balance to weigh SEO versus usability
