I see a lot of sites linking to pages within their site with sometimes very specific and long link text. In fact it seems pretty clear that their using specific search keywords that they want to rank for, and in many cases link to the same page with different but similarly targetted keywords.

Does this work or help you with your serps. I've also noted this is done alot in a sites footer.

Yes it worked for me. Just like the google sitemap helps google better understand the structure of your site and where the main sections are. Linking to other parts of your site with specific keywords does pass link juice and should be used in a sparing manner....  Just don't over do it  O0

I'd agree that internal link juice is passed but how much is passed is a different issue all together. My view is that it doesn't pass on that much, so don't spend too much time on it. Just do it casually  !-!

I use it always if it is possible.
But I agree with truffleshuffle, it does not give big link juice.

Internal linking, search engines love this.  I only know of Bing that punishes excessive amounts of internal linking but for the most part internal linking is very good.

An internal link lets you link to another section on the same web page, so it fundamentally scrolls the page up or down to the desired location. The beginning tag looks like<A HREF="#name"> and the closing tag looks like </A>.

Giving links to inner pages to the specific word or keyword is called as internal linking or contextual linking. Its an one type on-page optimization technique. When the google bot crawls your site, it will check the content. So if you give  links for a keyword. Bot will crawl that link, it helps to boost your ranking for a particular keyword. So contextual linking is very important in SEO point of view.. :)

Internal links are links that go from one page on a domain to a different page on the same domain. They are commonly used in main navigation.Internal Links are hyperlinks that point at (target) the same domain as the domain that the link exists on . In layman's terms, an internal link is one that points to another page on the same website.

Internal linking helps to crawl and indexing. Google bots are designed to recreate a user's thinking process. They're going to visit your website and follow all the links and pages that are easily indexed. These links can give a boost to other pages and help you rank higher overall.
