META's do they still work ?
« on: 05-08-2010, 07:34:36 »
I remember back in the 90's when I used to build simple static html sites we used to stuff the META keywords and description tag with loads of keywords and related terms. This used to work wonders on yahoo, altavista and the other top search engines of that time.

I know these don't have the same effect now and that sites like Google are more intelligent but surely google still reads these and uses them for something ? What are they used for ? And should I even bother populating them on future sites ?

Please enlighten this poor old cookie monster lol  :o

Yep they still read META tags and descriptions but they don't put as much emphasis on them anymore.  Google's constantly changing and we can't abuse hundreds of META tags for traffic anymore :)  Google search code has come verry far since the 90s

I place always Meta on my pages.
I don't exactly know if SEs use it, but who knows when they start again using these tags.

I read out on Google's official blog that Google don't use Meta Keywords for rankings. Look here:

Still keywords meta tag is considering by yahoo and bing, so you can use keywords meta tag with Title and Description tags.

Meta tags do work in the sense that they are a snippet of informational code that has been located between your <HEAD></HEAD>tags that are part of your HTML document.
