nofollow tags are important with those backlinks which you don't trust...
Some people use nofollow attribute with internal links, I don't think you need to use nofollow in internal linking, as PR flow is good in internal linking structure.

Meta robots tags is ideal to use with the content which you don't want to get crawled. Also, Robots META Tag is meant to provide users who cannot upload or control the /robots.txt file at their websites, with a last chance to keep their content out of search engine indexes and services.

rel=nofollow is to tell robots to no follow a particular link on web page. While meta robots is to tell Robots to no follow any links on a particular page.
