Problem with Canonical tag
« on: 04-24-2015, 04:56:04 »
Hello Everyone,

When I give Canonical tag to the /home.aspx page, even the same tag applies to domain URL as well. Is it what happens when we use Canonical tag, or I am doing something wrong?

Please help me with appropriate solution.

canonical tag is a small indication to the search bot telling "Hi this is duplicate version of the main page"
This is how it works

Example: If Your main url is, But there is another copy for the page example

Google will crawl the both links i mentioned above, But cannot decide which link to show in search results. We might expect Google should show main url, but there are chances Google might show duplicate url instead of main url. For getting Google out of this confusion

1. Decide Your Main url first
2. Insert <link rel="canonical" href="your-main-url" /> in the head section of your duplicate page

Coming to domain case
website can be opened,
You need to decide the preferred domain among all the possibilities that can open your website

Ex: If you decide as your main url, Then 301 redirect and other possibilities to main url
This is how you can eliminate duplicate and canonical issues
